lesson learned

I’ve been having electrical work done in my house all week, my office is currently in my dining room, one computer and printer hooked up, finally got the internet connection working on one computer, this getting up at 7am everyday is killing me, the paper is in a drawer somewhere, the files are all over the place, my stapler is up on the box spring wedge up against the couch and wall, my assistant has been setting up shop wherever she can find space, to get to the kitchen, first you have to slide the chair out of the way or go around through the garage, its a mess but I’ve been able to work through it all and I was here everyday while the electrician was working except today. I left 100.00 cash in my accounting drawer, the cash was sitting on my desk up until today, I thought it would be better to put it away then leave it out since I was going to have to leave for a few hours and appease some clients – even though I told all my clients I wouldn’t be in this week. I completely trust my electrician, he’s a good guy. His worker seemed like a good guy too, I don’t know him but my electrician does and I don’t see him hiring someone he doesn’t trust. And my assistant was here today, but I don’t think she would do it, she couldn’t even find the stamps which were in the drawer below.  But the thing is when I got home tonight, the cash was gone. It not that I mind that the cash was gone, if someone needed it that bad to steal then I guess I gave to charity but what I’m upset about is that (1) someone went into my drawers (2) my receipts that were all wadded up with the cash are gone (3) and my security was broken, my trust is completely broken with a few people (4) I have other people’s accounting information in those drawers, more worried about their security, they trust me and someone got into my things, what about their info?  There are so many more valuable things to steal, things I wouldn’t have missed for awhile but my cash, I was going to use that for the garage sale and to buy groceries tonight. (maybe I misplaced it but I don’t think so, I know where I left it this morning). I did call my assistant and asked her if she saw it, I did call the electrician and asked him if anyone else was here while I was gone, no one is fessing up. Lesson learned: don’t leave the house when there are contractors in the house. Stupid me for leaving cash out, stupid me for leaving, I had a bad feeling when I left. Should learn to listen to those feelings.
